Football - the basics

Football, known as soccer in some countries, is the world’s most popular sport. It’s played by millions of people of all ages, from recreational kick-arounds in the park to professional matches in packed stadiums. The core objective is simple: score more goals than the opposing team within the allotted time. .


Basic Rules and Objectives

The game is played by two teams of 11 players each, including a goalkeeper. The main objective is to score goals by getting the ball into the opposing team’s net. The team with the most goals at the end of the match wins. A standard match is 90 minutes, divided into two 45-minute halves, with a 15-minute halftime break.


Essential Equipment:

Ball:
Standard football, size 5 for adults.
Pitch:
Rectangular field with goals at each end.
Clothing:
Jerseys, shorts, socks, shin guards, and cleats.
Goalposts:
Located at the center of each goal line.


Positions and Roles:

Goalkeeper (1):
Guards the goal, the only player allowed to use hands within the penalty area.
Defenders (4):
Prevent the opposing team from scoring.
Center Backs:
Play centrally and are strong tacklers.
Full Backs:
Play on the left and right sides.
Midfielders (4):
Link between defense and attack.
Central Midfielders:
Often control the game's tempo.
Wingers:
Play on the flanks, providing crosses.
Forwards (2):
Main attackers focused on scoring goals.
Strikers:
Central attackers.
Second Strikers:
Support primary strikers.


Basic Skills and Techniques:

Dribbling:
Control and move the ball with your feet. Use various parts of the foot for different types of control.
Passing:
Transfer the ball to a teammate. Utilize short passes for close control and long passes to cover more distance.
Shooting:
Attempt to score goals. Aim for accuracy and power, using various parts of the foot.
Tackling:
Dispossess an opponent cleanly without committing a foul. Types include standing and sliding tackles.
Heading:
Use your head to direct the ball. Effective in defense and attack, especially during set pieces.
Practice Drills:
Dribbling Drills:
Set up cones and practice maneuvering the ball through them.
Passing Drills:
Pair up and practice different passing techniques.
Shooting Drills:
Practice shooting from various distances and angles.
Tackling Drills:
Practice timing and technique with teams or sparring partners.
Header Drills:
Practice heading the ball towards targets.


Strategies and Formations:

4-4-2 Formation:
Balanced, popular for many teams.
4-3-3 Formation:
Focuses on attacking. Great for teams with strong wingers.
5-3-2 Formation:
Defensive, uses three center-backs.
3-5-2 Formation:
Midfield domination, commonly used for aggressive play.


Playing the Game:

Kick-Off.
Begins the game and restarts after each goal.

General Play:
Pass, dribble, and shoot towards the opponent’s goal while protecting your own.
Set Pieces:
Free kicks, corner kicks, and throw-ins. These provide opportunities to score.
Substitutions:
Teams can make limited changes to replace tired or underperforming players.
