What Athletics Clubs Print on a Membership Card
Alongside the club name and vest colours, the field that earns its place on an athletics card is the registration number. Race entries, results systems and championship qualification all ask for it, and an athlete standing in a queue at a Saturday morning meet should not have to scroll through old emails to find it. Printed on the card, it is simply there.
Age group is the other field that matters more in athletics than in most sports, because it governs what an athlete is actually eligible to enter. Most clubs print the age group — U13, U15, U17, U20, senior, masters — rather than a date of birth, since the card is reissued each season anyway and age groups roll over on a fixed date.
The reverse typically carries the training group or coach, session nights and times, and the track address. Clubs with a junior section add a parent or guardian contact number, which is the detail volunteers reach for most often when something goes wrong at a session.

An athletics membership card lives in a kit bag with spikes, a wet vest and a leaking water bottle. Winter means cross-country mud; summer means a bag left in a hot car outside a track for three hours. A paper membership slip does not come out of a season like that still readable.

A Plastic Card to Approve
Ask for a printed card if your cards carry variable data, and check the longest
name you have.
Registration numbers are fixed length, but names are not, and the one thing worth
seeing in the flesh is whether your longest member name still fits its space at a
readable size. It is much easier to adjust before 300 cards are printed than after.
We will print a real card from your artwork and post it to you for exactly that
check.
Artwork Specifications & Guides
Two things from the guide are worth reading before you send an athletics job.
Keep variable fields short. A long name and a wordy age-group
label still have to fit the space on the card, so the space has to be designed for
the worst case, not the average one.
Supply CMYK, not RGB. Vest colours are usually the most saturated
thing on the card, and saturated blues and greens are what shift most in
conversion.
