How Long Does Plastic Card Printing Take in the UK?
Standard plastic card printing in the UK typically takes between 3 and 10 working days from artwork approval. Some printers offer 24-48 hour express turnarounds at a premium. Large or complex orders, specialist finishes, or variable data can extend lead times to 2-3 weeks.
Here is what actually drives lead time — and how to avoid delays.

What actually drives lead time
Artwork approval: the clock does not start until your artwork is approved and signed off. If you send files that need revision, that adds days before production even begins.
Print method: digital printing (short runs) is faster than offset litho (large runs). Digital can often turn around in 3-5 working days.
Quantity: small quantities (under 500) are typically faster. Large quantities take longer to print and finish.
Finishes: lamination, spot UV, and embossing add production steps and time.
Encoding: if cards need magnetic stripe encoding or chip personalisation, add time for the encoding step.
Variable data: unique barcodes, names, or numbers on each card require data processing and per-card printing — slower than static runs.
Proof requirement: if you require a physical printed proof before the full run, add 2-5 working days for the proof to be produced and sent to you.
Typical timelines by complexity
- Simple double-sided full-colour card, 250-500 quantity, print-ready artwork: 3-5 working days
- As above with magnetic stripe encoding: 5-7 working days
- Variable data (unique barcodes per card), 1,000+ quantity: 7-10 working days
- Premium finish (spot UV, metallic, embossing), any quantity: 7-14 working days
- Express / urgent: 24-48 hours possible at most printers for standard cards at extra cost — confirm availability before relying on this
How to avoid delays
- Submit print-ready artwork first time. Incorrect files are the most common cause of delays
- Approve proofs promptly. Sitting on a digital proof for three days adds three days to your delivery
- Confirm your data file (for variable data jobs) is complete and correctly formatted before submission
- Order with a buffer. If you need cards for a launch event on a specific date, add 5 working days to your expected lead time as a safety margin
- Communicate your deadline upfront. Most printers will tell you if the timeline is achievable or flag a problem before you commit
Delivery
Most UK card printers ship by courier — next working day delivery once dispatched is standard. Factor in delivery time on top of production time. Some printers quote lead time including delivery; others quote production time only. Clarify which is which before you place your order.
