Boating club cards are ordered against the season, and they tend to carry more operational detail than most club cards — berth numbers, induction status, duty officer contacts — because the card is doing real work on a pontoon rather than sitting in a wallet.

What a Boating Club Membership Card Usually Carries
The front normally shows the club name and burgee, the member’s name, a membership number and the category they hold — berth holder, swinging mooring, dinghy park, crew or social. The season the card covers belongs there too, because almost every boating club works to an annual cycle and marina staff need to know at a glance whether a card is current.
Where the club allocates berths or dinghy park spaces annually, printing the allocated number on the card saves a surprising amount of administration. It also gives staff a quick way to match a person to a hull.
The reverse is the natural home for the duty officer or harbour master’s number, the VHF channel the club works on, and confirmation that the member has completed the club’s induction or safety briefing — something many clubs require before anyone is permitted to launch. A note on the gate or slipway access policy is common; the code itself is best left off a card that can be dropped on a pontoon.
Salt, Spray and Why Paper Never Lasts Afloat
Salt water is harder on a printed card than rain is. Rain dries and leaves nothing behind; salt dries into a fine crust that abrades whatever surface it settles on, and it finds its way into every seam. That is exactly why laminating pouches fail so quickly around boats — once salt works in behind the film at a corner, the print inside is finished and the pouch cannot be resealed.
Our boating club cards are solid 760-micron PVC with the design sealed beneath the card’s surface, not laminated on top of it. There is no film to lift and nothing for salt to get behind. A card can be rinsed under a tap and dried off, and one that has spent a season in a cockpit locker comes out at the end of it perfectly legible.
It is the same material and thickness as a bank card, so it lives happily in a wallet, an oilskin pocket or a chart table drawer without curling.
Practical Extras for Boating Club Cards
Hole and slot punching is the first thing most boating clubs add. A 5mm hole punched 6mm in from the edge, or a 15mm x 3mm slot centred on an edge, lets the card hang from a lanyard — far more practical than fishing a card out of a wet pocket while standing on a pontoon in a wind.
For clubs with a gated compound or car park, there are three routes. A magnetic strip can be encoded by us or supplied blank for you to encode yourself. A barcode works with most sign-in systems — Code39, Code128 or EAN5. RFID cards, in 1K or 4K Mifare or Fudan, are supplied unencoded, so you will need to write your own data to them; that is worth knowing before you order, because it is the opposite of how we handle magnetic strips.
Beyond access, a second signature strip is a neat way to record the date a member last completed the safety induction, since the strip takes an ordinary pen and can be updated without a reprint. And colour coding berth holders differently from social members remains the fastest identification system a club can have, at no extra cost.

Burgees are usually simple flat shapes, which reproduce beautifully — when
the file is the right kind. What we often receive is a photograph of a burgee
flying, which is a different thing entirely and will not print as clean flat
colour.

just £10 +vat, along with the usual sizing, bleed and
colour-mode corrections.

The majority of cards that we print have a signature strip and also a unique number which is usually sequential however you can supply an Excel document and we can print the details from the document onto the cards so each one has unique details. For example, their name, membership number, expiry date, level of membership etc.

to them and your reader sees them. One physical card answers that before you commit

Do not print the gate code. Print the policy, not the number. A
card with the compound code on it is a liability the first time one is dropped on a
pontoon.
Flat colour for the burgee. Supply it as vector or flat CMYK
artwork rather than a photograph of the flag, which will never print as clean

Normally the membership or berthing secretary, in the weeks before lift-in.
Send the burgee and a list of berth holders and social members, tell us what the
gate needs, and approve the proof we email. Cards arrive well before the first
boats go in. Afterwards we keep the artwork, so next season is an email with a new
year and an updated list.
