Squad is the field that defines a swimming club card. Development, junior, age group, youth, senior, masters — each squad trains in different sessions, and clubs that rent pool time in blocks need it obvious who is entitled to be in the water when. That is followed by the club name, the swimmer’s name, a membership number, governing-body registration and the year.

Registration deserves its place on the front because licensed galas require it, and a swimmer or a parent filling in an entry at short notice should not have to go looking for the number.

The reverse works hardest carrying the session timetable for that squad, poolside and welfare contacts, and gala entry arrangements. For junior swimmers, a parent or guardian contact is close to essential — it is the detail poolside volunteers need most urgently and have to hand least often.

A swimming club card leads a harder life than almost any other. It is carried through a warm, humid changing room several times a week, handled with wet hands, put down on a wet bench, and passed to a leisure centre attendant who is also dealing with wet hands.

Chlorine vapour in a humid room is what finishes laminated cards, and it does it faster than most people expect. Warmth softens the seal, moisture works into the corner, chlorine gets behind the film, and within a few months the card is peeling and the printing is going with it. There is no fix for it once it starts.

Our swimming club cards have no laminate at all. They are 760-micron solid PVC — bank card material — with the design sealed beneath the card’s own surface. Nothing can get behind it because there is no behind. Wipe the card dry and it is exactly as it was.

Colour coding by squad is the single most useful thing a swimming club can do with its cards, and it is free, because both sides print in full colour as standard. When pool time is rented in blocks and the wrong swimmers in the wrong session costs the club money, letting a coach or an attendant sort a poolside queue by card colour is worth real money.

Variable data handles the rest of the detail. Send an Excel file containing only the fields to be printed — name, registration number, squad — and every card is individually printed with its own within a single production run. Keep the fields short, because a long name still has to fit the space available.

A signature strip is worth adding where a parent or guardian needs to sign to confirm consent, and a 5mm punched hole lets a card hang from a kit bag rather than getting lost in it.
