What a Shooting Club Membership Card Needs to Show
Alongside the club name, the member’s name and a membership number, two fields do the real work on a shooting club card. The first is discipline — clay, target rifle, air rifle, gallery rifle, shotgun — because it determines which ranges and sessions a member is entitled to use.
The second is status, and specifically whether a member is a probationer or a full member. That distinction is central to how UK shooting clubs are run: probationers shoot under direct supervision, and a range officer needs to establish which is which before anyone gets to the firing point. It is the strongest argument for making status the most visible thing on the card after the name.
The reverse commonly carries the range rules, the range officer or secretary’s number, and the home range address. It is worth stating explicitly that the card is a club membership card and does not replace a firearm or shotgun certificate — a line most clubs are glad to have printed rather than repeated.
A Card That Is Checked at Every Single Visit
Shooting clubs are unusual in that the membership card is genuinely inspected, every visit, by someone who then checks it against a register. That puts two demands on it: it has to still be legible after years of use, and its number has to match what the register says.
On legibility, the environment is not gentle. A card lives in a range bag or a gun slip pocket, comes out at an outdoor clay ground in whatever the weather is doing, and gets handled by people who have been shooting all morning. Printed paper and laminated cards both fail that within a season or two.

Numbering, Status and Other Options
Sequential numbering is the one we would fit first for any shooting club. It is the most straightforward way to assign membership numbers — the next card in the box becomes the next number — and it keeps the physical cards and your register in step. You can specify a start number and let us run on from it, or send an Excel file with the exact numbers you need. The numbering can be printed in any CMYK colour, including one matched to your club badge.
Colour coding probationers separately from full members is the other change most clubs make, and it is the one with the most safety value. Both sides of every card print in full colour as standard, so it costs nothing to make the distinction visible across a range rather than something a range officer has to read.
Two signature strips are worth specifying: one for the member’s signature, one labelled for the date of the last competency review or certificate check, written in pen as it happens. And a 5mm punched hole lets range officers and committee wear their cards on a lanyard where members can identify them without asking.
