How to create a stunning Membership Card design

Creating a compelling membership card design is crucial for making a lasting impression, as it often serves as the first touchpoint between you and a member.

Here's a practical guide to designing an effective membership card — covering everything from layout and branding through to print-ready artwork requirements.

Purpose and Audience

Start by considering the purpose of your membership card and who will be receiving it. Is it for exclusive club members, or is it for a loyalty programme? Understanding your audience will guide the overall design and messaging of your card.

Brand Consistency

Your membership card should reflect your brand identity. Use colours, fonts, and imagery that align with your brand guidelines. Consistency across all your marketing materials, including your membership card, helps reinforce brand recognition.

Essential Information

Include only the most critical information to avoid clutter. This typically includes:

  • Member's name
  • Membership ID or number
  • Membership level or status
  • Expiry date
  • Your website or contact details

Keep it clean — if you're tempted to cram in more, consider moving secondary information to the back of the card instead.

Typography

Choose fonts that are readable and professional. Avoid using more than two different fonts; instead, use variations in weight and size to create hierarchy. Sans-serif fonts generally work best on plastic cards as they remain legible at small sizes and reproduce cleanly in print.

As a rule of thumb, keep body text no smaller than 6pt, and make sure member names or numbers are large enough to read at a glance.

Colours

Select colours that reflect your brand. Ensure there is strong contrast between text and background to maintain legibility — light text on a dark background or vice versa. Avoid placing small text over busy or patterned backgrounds.

Important: all artwork should be supplied in CMYK colour mode, not RGB. RGB colours are for screens and will shift when converted to print. If you're designing in software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, set your document to CMYK from the outset. See our CMYK guide for more detail.

Logo

Incorporate your logo prominently. It acts as the visual anchor of your card and helps with brand recognition. Supply your logo as a vector file (AI, EPS, or PDF) where possible — this ensures it stays sharp at any size. Avoid stretching or distorting it to fit the layout.

Images and Graphics

While minimalist designs are popular, including a graphic or background image can make your card stand out. Any photographs or raster images must be supplied at a minimum of 300dpi at the finished print size. Low-resolution images will appear blurry when printed — if it looks slightly soft on screen, it will look significantly worse on the card.

Artwork Setup: Bleed and Safe Zone

This is one of the most commonly overlooked steps, and getting it wrong means your card won't print correctly.

  • Bleed: extend your background colour or design 1.5mm beyond the card edge on all sides. This prevents white edges appearing after cutting.
  • Safe zone: keep all important content (text, logos, membership numbers) at least 3mm away from the card edge. Anything closer risks being trimmed off.
  • Card size: standard CR80 plastic cards measure 85.6mm × 54mm — the same as a credit card.
  • File format: supply artwork as a high-resolution PDF, AI, or EPS file. We do not recommend supplying Word documents or low-resolution JPEGs.

Full artwork specifications and downloadable templates are available on our artwork guides page.

Material and Finish

Solid PVC membership cards are the most durable option and are recyclable through normal council recycling. You can choose between a gloss finish for a vibrant, high-impact look, or a matt finish for a more understated, premium feel. Both are available across our full membership card range.

Back Design

Don't leave the back of your card blank. Options include a signature strip, magnetic stripe, sequential numbering, barcode, QR code, or simply your contact details and website. If you're including a magnetic stripe or signature panel, make sure your design accounts for their standard position — our artwork guides show exactly where these sit.

Common Design Mistakes to Avoid

  • Text too close to the card edge — always observe the 3mm safe zone.
  • RGB instead of CMYK — colours will shift at print, sometimes significantly.
  • Low-resolution images — anything below 300dpi will print poorly.
  • Too much information — overcrowded cards look unprofessional and are hard to read.
  • Fonts not outlined or embedded — if we don't have your font, text may reflow or be substituted. Always outline fonts before supplying artwork.
  • Forgetting the back — the reverse is valuable real estate; don't waste it.

Not confident designing it yourself?

No problem at all — our in-house design team can handle everything for you. From a rough brief or your existing logo, we'll create a professional membership card design ready for print. Find out more about our design service.

Proofing and Approval

Before we go to print, we'll send you a free photorealistic email proof of your card so you can check the design, colours, and layout. Carefully review all text — membership numbers, expiry dates, contact details — and ask a colleague to proofread it too. Once you approve the proof, we move straight to production.

Ready to get started? Request a quote and our team will typically respond within 10 minutes during working hours.
