What Nearly Every Club Membership Card Has on It
Five things turn up on almost every club card we print: the club name and badge, the member’s name, a membership number, the membership category, and the year the card runs to. Get those right and everything else is refinement.
The reverse is where clubs differ, and the useful question to ask is simply: what does this club explain most often? Opening hours, guest policy, ground rules, session times, the number to ring when something goes wrong. Whatever the committee finds itself repeating is what belongs on the back of the card.
It is worth deciding early what the card is actually for, because the answer changes the design. A card that is identification at a door needs the year and the category to be readable at arm’s length in bad light. A card that is a credential for a system needs the barcode or chip placed where a reader can get at it. And a card that is mainly a keepsake — a reason to feel part of something, and a prompt to renew — can afford to spend its space on the club’s badge and colours.
Why Clubs Move From Paper to Plastic
Most clubs arrive here having tried something cheaper first. Printed card stock works until it is carried in a pocket, at which point it goes soft at the corners within weeks. Laminating pouches survive rain but not time: the seal lifts somewhere along an edge, moisture gets behind the film, and the printing inside is finished with no way to reseal it.
Our club membership cards are 760-micron solid PVC — the same material and thickness as a bank card — with the design sealed beneath the surface rather than laminated on top. There is no film to lift, the print cannot be scuffed off, and both sides are printed in full colour as standard at no extra cost.
There is a renewal argument here as well as a durability one. A card that still looks smart eleven months after it was issued is a better advertisement for renewing than a dog-eared one, and for most clubs the difference in cost between the two is small against the value of a single subscription.

Ours are solid PVC and can be
recycled through standard household and commercial
facilities. The laminated paper cards they usually replace cannot: the film is bonded
to the card and the two cannot be separated.

Optional Extras
The extras that suit a club depend entirely on what the card has to do.
If a machine reads it, that means
barcodes,
QR codes, magnetic strips or RFID. If something
changes during the year, a signature or write-on strip saves a reprint. If the card is
worn, it needs a punched hole. If a tier deserves recognition, metallic foiling or a
metallic base card.

The majority of cards that we print have a signature strip and also a unique number which is usually sequential however you can supply an Excel document and we can print the details from the document onto the cards so each one has unique details. For example, their name, membership number, expiry date, level of membership etc.

A Plastic Card to Approve
An emailed proof is enough for most orders. A printed card is worth asking for in three
situations.
When the card carries a barcode, magnetic stripe or chip, because only a real card
proves your reader sees it. When you are colour-coding categories, because colours
separate differently in print than on screen. And when you have chosen a finish
— embossing, metallic — that cannot be judged on a monitor at all.
