They also have black edges — because the PVC is black all the way through, not just on the surface. Cheaper alternatives use white-core PVC with a black coating, which means the edges show white and the illusion breaks the moment someone looks at the card side-on.
As they are solid black plastic, to fully utilise the space, printing can be done on both sides to convey more information.

What is the difference between satin black and gloss black plastic cards?
Satin black cards have a matte (non-shiny) surface finish. Gloss black cards have a high-shine, reflective surface. The satin finish is generally considered more premium in feel, and it provides better contrast when metallic foil inks are applied.
