What to Print on a Bodybuilding Club Membership Card
The front carries the gym or club name, the member’s name, a membership number and the tier they are on — off-peak, full, 24-hour access, or competition squad — along with the date the current term ends. If there is a barcode for a turnstile, think about where it sits: put it near an edge where a scanner can reach it, rather than in the middle where a thumb naturally lands.
The reverse is where the operational detail goes. Staffed hours against unstaffed access hours is the single most useful thing to print for any gym running 24-hour entry, followed by induction status and the floor rules that actually get enforced — collars on bars, re-racking, chalk policy. An emergency contact number is worth the space in a gym where members train alone at odd hours.
Clubs preparing members for the platform often note the competing federation and category, and some print a coaching tier so floor staff know at a glance who is on a structured programme and who has just joined.
Sweat, Chalk and Why Paper Does Not Last a Month
A gym card is handled several times a week with hands that are sweaty, chalky or both, and in between it sits in a bag next to a damp towel. There is no printed paper card in the world that survives that for a year. Even laminated ones give up, because the seal lifts at a corner and moisture gets behind the film.
These are 760-micron solid PVC cards with the design sealed beneath the surface, so the print cannot be rubbed, sweated or scratched off. They wipe clean, and a card that has spent six months in a kit bag still scans and still reads.
Where a card is handled as constantly as a gym card, the matt finish is usually the better choice — it does not hold fingerprints the way gloss does, so the card still looks like something your gym would want to hand out after a few months of use.
Access Control, Tiers and Other Options
There are three ways to make a card open a door, and they suit different setups. Barcodes — Code39, Code128 or EAN5 — work with most membership software, and your provider will tell you which format they expect. Magnetic strips can be encoded by us before we ship, or supplied blank so you can encode them on your own equipment. RFID cards come as 1K or 4K Mifare or Fudan and are supplied unencoded, so you will need to write your own data to them — the opposite of how magnetic strips work here, and worth knowing before you decide.
For separating tiers visually, a metallic base card makes an effective top tier. The whole card starts as metallic gold or silver and your design prints over it in any CMYK colour. The one thing to design around is white: there is no white base underneath, so white text and white images will not show.
Where there is no access control software at all and staff simply need to recognise who is coming through the door, a photoseal attaches a passport-sized photograph to the card. They are straightforward to attach yourself, and a useful trick is to part-attach them before a new member arrives so signing someone up takes seconds rather than minutes.

Two guide points that matter most for gym cards.
Barcodes need light behind them. Leave a pale panel under any
barcode, however dark the rest of the card. Scanners read contrast, not design
intent.
Watch thin white type. Fine white lettering on a dark ground can
thicken slightly in print. Go a weight heavier than looks right on screen.

The card carries the credential your access system reads — barcode, magnetic strip or RFID — and your system applies the restriction. We can also print the tier plainly on the front so staff can check it by eye.
Can we show a member's competing federation or category?
Yes. Federation and category are commonly printed alongside the membership details, and can be different on every card if you supply the information in an Excel file.
Can coaching tiers be shown on the card?
Yes. Tiers can be printed as text, distinguished by card colour at no extra cost, or given a metallic gold or silver base card for a top tier that is obvious across a gym floor.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
25 cards. That works for an independent gym signing up its first members as well as for a club ordering several thousand.
Which is better for gym entry, a barcode, a magnetic strip or RFID?
It depends on your system. Barcodes suit most membership software, magnetic strips suit existing swipe readers, and RFID suits contactless turnstiles. Barcodes and magnetic strips can be encoded by us; RFID cards are supplied unencoded for you to write.
Should we choose gloss or matt for a gym card?
Matt, in most cases. Both cost the same, but a card handled several times a week with chalky or sweaty hands shows fingerprints far less on a matt finish.
Can we add a member photo to the card?
Yes, using a photoseal, which attaches a passport-sized photograph to the card. They are easy to attach yourself, and part-attaching them in advance makes signing up a new member much quicker.
Will the cards survive being carried in a gym bag?
