Letting the Metal Do the Work
The most common mistake on a metallic card is covering it up. The base card is gold or silver across its whole surface, and every area your design leaves unprinted is an area that reflects light and moves as the card moves. Print edge to edge and you have paid for a metallic card and produced a flat one.
The examples above that work hardest tend to be the sparest: a foiled logo, a line of type, a membership number, and a great deal of bare metal. A card like that changes as it is tilted, which is something no printed finish can imitate and the entire reason for choosing this product.
It is worth saying plainly that a metallic base is not a metallic ink. We are not simulating the effect with a shiny colour — the card itself is reflective, and what you print sits on top of it. That is why these photograph poorly and sell themselves instantly in the hand.
Hot Foil Printing, and What It Will and Will Not Do
Metallic cards are printed by hot foil, a process that stamps metallic foils and vivid pigment colours onto the card surface under heat and pressure. It produces sharp, durable, genuinely opaque colour that catches the light in a way conventional ink cannot.
It does not, however, reproduce photographs, gradients or halftones. Foil lays down as flat solid colour, so a design built around a photograph needs a full-colour card rather than this one. Very fine detail is worth checking too, since thin lines can fill in slightly under the pressure of the stamp.
There is one further design point specific to a metallic base, and it catches people out: white will not show. There is no white base underneath the metal for white ink or white areas to reveal, so anything you want to read as white has to be printed as an opaque white rather than left blank. We will point this out on your proof if your artwork assumes otherwise.
Cards are solid PVC at bank card size and thickness, and printing is available on both sides.
Gift Cards, VIP Tiers and When a Card Is the Product
Metallic cards get chosen when the card itself carries some of the perceived value rather than merely granting access to it. Gift cards are the clearest case: a gift card is handed from one person to another, and a reflective gold card says something about the amount on it before anyone reads the figure.
VIP and top-tier membership cards are the other main use. Where a scheme has several levels, a metallic card at the top does the job of explaining the hierarchy without a word of text, and it is one of the few upgrades members actually notice and mention.
Minimum order is 25 cards, which makes a metallic top tier viable even for a club or business with a handful of members at that level. Once your order is placed we email a photorealistic proof, usually within the hour, so you can see how the finished card will look before we print.

Metallic Plastic Card FAQs
Is the metallic effect a base card or a printed ink?
It is the base card. Gold or silver runs across the whole surface and your design is printed on top, which is why the effect shifts as the card is tilted. A printed metallic ink cannot do that.
Can I print white on a metallic card?
Only as an opaque printed white. There is no white base beneath the metal, so anywhere your design leaves blank will show as gold or silver rather than white.
Can you print photographs on a metallic card?
No. These are hot foil printed rather than full colour CMYK, so photographs, gradients and halftones will not reproduce. Logos, type and bold graphic designs are what the process is suited to.
Should I cover the whole card with my design?
We would advise against it. The unprinted areas are where the metallic base is visible, so leaving space is what makes the card look like a metallic card rather than an ordinary printed one.
What colours are available?

What's the minimum order?
