Jewellery Certificate Cards

A diamond ring is sold on the details: the carat weight, the colour and clarity, the metal, and whether the stones are natural or laboratory grown. A jewellery certificate card puts those details in writing on a rigid plastic card the size of a bank card. It lives in the ring box, and it stays readable for as long as the piece is worn. CP Cards supplies plastic jewellery certificate cards to jewellers, lab grown diamond brands and grading services. They're printed in full colour on both sides in England, with a free photorealistic proof before anything is printed, and personalised with each piece's own details.

What goes on a jewellery certificate card

The front carries the details of one piece. Most jewellers include:

  • A unique certificate number and the date
  • The type of jewellery: ring, earrings, pendant, bracelet
  • The metal, such as 18ct white gold or platinum
  • The number of diamonds and their total carat weight
  • The centre stone's carat, colour, clarity, cut and shape
  • Side stones, setting type and any laser inscription number
  • Whether the diamonds are natural or laboratory grown
  • A QR code that opens the online record for that piece
  • The name or signature of the person who checked it

The back is the same on every card, so it's the place for care instructions, how to check the certificate online, and your small print.

Print once, then personalise as each piece sells

Most jewellers don't know the details of every piece on the day they order their cards, so we work in two stages.

Stage 1: the branded card with the certificate details left blank
Stage 1: your design, printed in full colour on both sides and held in stock.
Stage 2: the same card with one piece's details and QR code printed on it
Stage 2: each card printed with one piece's details and its own QR code.

Stage 1: your branded cards. We print your design on white PVC in full colour on both sides, with the certificate area on the front left clear. The back is finished at this stage. Cards are printed and dispatched in 7 working days from proof approval and payment.

Stage 2: each card's own details. There are two ways to add them:

  • All at once, with your order. If you already have the details, for a collection you're launching for example, send us a spreadsheet with your order. Every card is printed with its own details in the same production run.
  • As you sell, through our bureau personalisation service. We hold your printed cards in stock. Whenever you have certificates to issue, email us an Excel file with one row per piece, and we personalise those cards and post them to you. We aim to dispatch the same day for files received before 1pm, but please allow 3 working days. There's no minimum: call off one card or a thousand.

Bureau personalisation prints the details in one colour, on the front of the card: black, white, metallic gold or metallic silver. Black on a light panel is the easiest to read, so we'll lay out your design with a clear, light area for the details.

A unique QR code on every card

A different QR code on every card turns a printed certificate into one the owner can check. Each code holds that card's own web address, such as your verification page followed by the certificate number, so scanning it opens the record you hold for that piece. Send the web addresses as a column in your spreadsheet. We recommend a QR code at least 15mm across.

Phones vary, so we can't test that every code scans. Print your email proof at actual size and scan it before you approve it, or add a postal proof for £65 +vat and test real cards.

What we can't print: a photo of each piece

We can't print a different photograph of each piece on its card. Personalisation is text, numbers and codes. A picture that is the same on every card, such as a diamond or your signature ring, can be part of your printed design.

For a photo of the individual piece, put it on the online record that the card's QR code opens. The owner sees the photo as soon as they scan the card, and online it can be shown far larger than it ever could on the card.

The back of the card

The back of a jewellery certificate card An emerald card with a gold border, care instructions for the jewellery, how to check the certificate online, and a line saying it is not a valuation.
An example layout for the back: care instructions, how to check the certificate, and the small print.

The back is printed in full colour with the rest of the card and is the same on every one. Jewellers use it for:

  • Care instructions for the piece
  • How to check the certificate: scan the QR code, or enter the certificate number on your website
  • A statement that the diamonds are laboratory grown, where they are
  • Small print, such as that the certificate describes the piece as it was examined and is not a valuation

Harder to fake

A certificate is only worth something if it can't easily be copied. These features make our cards harder to fake, and they work best together:

  • A unique number on every card, matched to your own sales records.
  • A different QR code on every card, linking to that piece's record on your website.
  • The laser inscription number, where a stone has one, printed on the card so the card and the stone can be matched.
  • Gold or silver foiling, which gives the impression of a security mark and helps deter cards from being replicated.

There's more on this in our guide to stopping cards being copied.

A card that suits the box

White PVC printed in full colour suits most jewellery certificates: your design can use any colours you like, and the details read clearly on a light panel. Choose a High Gloss finish, or Premium Matt for a softer look, and add gold or silver foil to your logo. Our in-house design team can set up your artwork for £29 +vat if you'd like a hand. For the box, a printed card carrier presents the certificate rather than leaving it loose.

The cards are the standard CR80 size, 86 x 54mm and 760 microns thick (30 mil), the same as a bank card. Paper certificates crease and tear in a ring box; a plastic card stays flat, and on full colour cards the print is sealed under clear PVC so it can't scratch or wear off.

How to Order

  1. Email us the quantities you're considering, such as 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000, and say whether the details go on with your order or later through bureau personalisation. We'll quote a price per card at each quantity.
  2. Send your artwork for the front and back, or ask our design team to set it up
  3. Approve a free photorealistic proof
  4. Cards printed and dispatched in 7 working days from proof approval and payment. Bureau call-offs are then dispatched within 3 working days of each Excel file.

Jewellery Certificate Card FAQs

Can every card have its own certificate number?

Yes. We print a sequential number on every card, starting from whatever number you choose, or we can print the exact numbers from an Excel list you send us.

Can you print each piece's details from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Send a spreadsheet with your order and every card is printed with its own details in one run. If you issue certificates as pieces sell, our bureau personalisation service holds your cards in stock and personalises them whenever you email us a new Excel file.

Can you print a photo of each piece on its card?

No. We can't print a different photograph on each card. A picture that is the same on every card can be part of your design, and a photo of the individual piece can go on the online record that the card's QR code opens.

Can each card have its own QR code?

Yes. Send each card's web address as a column in your spreadsheet and every card gets a different QR code linking to that piece's record. We recommend a QR code at least 15mm across.

What file formats do you need?

For your card design, a print-ready PDF; see what file format to send. For the personalised details, one Excel file with one worksheet and one row per card, no hidden or blank rows or columns, laid out the same way every time. Each QR code's web address goes in its own column.

How long does it take?

Your printed cards are dispatched in 7 working days from proof approval and payment, or in 3 to 4 working days by express: ask us for cost and availability. Bureau personalisation is dispatched within 3 working days of each Excel file, and the same day where we can for files received before 1pm.

Can you send personalised cards straight to our customers?

No. Personalised cards are posted to you, or to a nominated person in your company, and you pass each one on with its piece of jewellery.

Can we see a sample first?

Yes. Our sample pack shows the card types and finishes we offer, and its cost is deducted from your order if you order within 30 days. To see your own design on a real card before the full run, add a postal proof for £65 +vat: a few real cards posted to you, which takes around 5 working days.

Do you offer price breaks for larger quantities?

Yes. The price per card falls as the quantity goes up. Tell us the quantities you're considering and we'll quote each one.

What size are the cards?

Standard CR80 credit card size, 86 x 54mm and 760 microns thick, so they fit in a ring box or a wallet.

What is the minimum order?

25 cards. With bureau personalisation there's no minimum call-off, so you can have a single card personalised when you sell a single piece.
