EcoTough card design ideas

EcoTough cards combine durability with 20% recycled content — a common choice for cards that get heavy daily handling, such as gym entry passes or staff ID badges, where a card is expected to last several years rather than being replaced annually. Clubs choosing this option are usually balancing a sustainability preference against needing a card that still survives frequent scanning and pocket wear.

EcoTough is not PVC and it is not a laminate. It is a synthetic material, 360 microns thick — less than half the thickness of a standard plastic card — that is nonetheless waterproof and genuinely tear resistant. Pulling one apart takes real effort.

The property that sets it apart from every other card we print is that you can write on it. An ordinary pen or pencil marks the surface directly, with no write-on panel needed, because the surface is not a sealed plastic skin. On a standard PVC card, writing anything means specifying a signature strip or a write-on panel in advance and hoping you allowed enough room.

That single characteristic drives most of the designs in the examples above. Visitor and contractor badges that need a name and a date filled in at reception. Session or class cards that get ticked off. Stamp cards. Anything where the card leaves you blank and gets completed by a person, rather than being printed complete.

Thinner means lighter and cheaper, which is why EcoTough tends to get chosen where cards are issued in real volume — a conference, a leisure centre intake, a staff badge run — rather than one at a time.

It also means a card that flexes rather than staying rigid. For a badge on a lanyard or a card that lives in a wallet that is fine, and the tear resistance means flexing does it no harm. For something that has to sit flat against a reader or be pushed through a slot, a thicker card behaves more predictably.

One firm limitation: embossing is not available on our thinnest cards, because raised characters need material to raise. Barcodes, QR codes, sequential numbering, personalisation, and slot or hole punching are all available and are what most EcoTough jobs use.

Printing is full colour CMYK on one or both sides with no difference in price, so there is no reason to leave the back blank.

EcoTough is PVC-free and laminate-free, made with 20% recycled content, and recyclable at the end of its life where facilities accept this type of plastic. That is a different proposition from our biodegradable cards, which are designed to break down, and different again from plastic-free board, which avoids plastic altogether.

Which is right depends on what happens to your cards. If they are replaced every year and binned, biodegradable addresses that directly. If they need to survive years of daily handling, a durable card that doesn't need replacing is the better answer, and that is EcoTough’s case — gym entry passes and staff ID badges expected to last rather than be reissued.
